JustHike · Bill Explore Tech
Summary
JustHike records hiking activity and displays maps. Your saved trails, imported GPX files, waypoints, and hiking records are stored locally on your device. The app also uses Mapbox and selected Google Firebase services, which process limited technical, usage, diagnostic, and location-related data as described below.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how Bill Explore Tech (“we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information when you use the JustHike Android application (the “App”). It applies to the Google Play version of JustHike.
2. Information processed on your device
The App may process and store the following information locally:
- Precise and approximate location: used to show your position, record an active hike, calculate distance, speed, elevation, and create waypoints.
- Hiking records: route coordinates, timestamps, elevation, distance, duration, and related statistics.
- Imported GPX content: routes, tracks, waypoints, names, descriptions, timestamps, and elevations contained in files you choose to import.
- Preferences: settings such as language, units, theme, and map-related preferences.
This information remains in the App’s private storage unless you choose to export or share it using Android’s system sharing features. JustHike disables Android cloud backup and device-transfer backup for its private app data.
3. Location access
JustHike requests location permission only for location-based features. When you start recording a hike, the App uses an Android foreground service and displays an ongoing notification. This allows recording to continue while an active hike is in progress, including when the screen is off or another app is visible. You can pause or stop recording at any time and can revoke location permission in Android Settings.
4. Information processed by service providers
| Service | Information and purpose |
|---|---|
| Google Analytics for Firebase | May collect app interactions, app and device information, and app instance or device identifiers to measure usage and improve the App. |
| Firebase Crashlytics | May collect crash traces, diagnostic logs, installation identifiers, app version, device model, operating system details, and device state to identify and fix crashes and reliability issues. |
| Firebase Remote Config | Uses a Firebase installation identifier and technical request information to provide configuration values used by the App. |
| Mapbox | Processes map requests and may process device, app, network, usage, and location-related telemetry to provide maps, location features, service security, billing, and product improvement. |
These providers process information under their own terms and privacy documentation:
5. How information is used
Information is processed for the following purposes:
- providing maps, hiking recording, GPX import, and App features;
- saving your records and preferences on your device;
- maintaining security, reliability, and compatibility;
- diagnosing crashes and technical problems;
- understanding general App usage and improving the product; and
- delivering configuration updates.
6. Sharing and sale of information
We do not sell your personal information. JustHike does not include advertising SDKs and does not use your hiking location for advertising. Information is disclosed to the service providers identified above only as needed to operate, analyze, secure, and improve the App. We may also disclose information when required by law or necessary to protect users, the public, our rights, or the security of the App.
When you intentionally export or share a route, image, or GPX file, the destination you select receives that content. This is a transfer initiated and controlled by you.
7. Data retention and deletion
Locally stored trails, hiking sessions, waypoints, and imported files remain on your device until you delete them in the App, clear the App’s storage, or uninstall the App. Service providers retain information according to their own retention policies. For example, Firebase states that Crashlytics retains crash reports and associated identifiers for a limited period before deletion begins.
JustHike does not currently offer user accounts. If you have a privacy or deletion request concerning information processed through our service providers, contact us using the address below. Some diagnostic data uses pseudonymous installation identifiers and may not be reasonably linkable to your identity.
8. Security
The App uses Android private storage for local data and does not permit cleartext network traffic. Network communications use HTTPS or other encrypted transport provided by the relevant service. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, but we use reasonable technical measures designed to protect information.
9. International processing
Google, Firebase, and Mapbox operate internationally. Information they process may be transferred to and handled in countries other than your country of residence, subject to their contractual and legal safeguards.
10. Children’s privacy
JustHike is a general-audience outdoor navigation application and is not designed to collect personal information directly from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when the App, its service providers, or applicable requirements change. The effective date at the top of this page identifies the latest version.
